Course Objectives

  • Introduction to the use of ionizing radiation for the management of cancer.
  • To get exposure to different types of clinical radiation generators.
  • Use of radioactive sources for the management of malignant and non-malignant diseases.
  • To know different areas of cancer management using advanced types of equipment.

Course Syllabus

Module – I: Orthovoltage equipment

Physical design and working principle, characteristics of x-ray tube.

Assignment-1: Treatment delivery and handling of machines.

Module – II: Cobalt 60 Teletherapy Units

Source construction and characteristics, working principle and handling mechanism.

Assignment-2: Check the accuracy of the mechanical parameters of equipments.

Module – III: Electron beam accelerator (Betatron)

Construction and principle of working.

Assignment-3: Handling and maintenance of betatron.

Module – IV: Linear Accelerator

Principle of acceleration, target design, wave guide design, beam bending system.

Magnetron and Klystron :

Physical design and working principle.

Assignment-4: Handling and maintenance of linear accelerator

Module – V: Remote after-loading system/machines

Principle, working and sources used in remote after-loading system.

Module – VI: Simulators

General properties and basic principle of radiotherapy simulator.

Equipment’s for radiotherapy simulation and treatment:

Caste making equipment, Styrofoam cutter, accessories for simulation.

Assignment-5: Preparation of caste for simulation (I)

Module – VII: Dosimetry Equipment’s

Working principle of dosimetric equipment and dosimeters.
