Digital Media Platforms: Television Production

Course Objectives

  • The course will provide students’ knowledge on the process of television production.
  • It will provide students an idea on the technology associated with film production.
  • The course will provide them a basic idea to understand film analysis techniques
  • This will help them to know media laws prevailing in India
  • It will provide them an insight to media business

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to produce news and entertainment programs for television
  • They will be able to produce films
  • Students will get knowledge about the laws associated with media industry
  • They will understand the functioning of media industry and business

Course Syllabus

Module - I

Television Technology: Broadcasting Standards: PAL, NTSC and SECAM. TV Studio Lay Out, Production Equipment—Cameras, Microphones and Lights. Special Effects Generators, Digital Video Effects, Character Generator, Computer Graphic Work Stations. TV Production—Studio and Field Production, TV staff and crew, their functions. Program Formats, Proposal Writing, Script Writing-- Outline, Treatment, Visualization, Shooting Script.

Module - II 

TV Production Process—Pre-Production, Set up and Rehearsal, Production and Post-Production. TV Direction-TV Language and Grammar, Blocking the Script, Storyboard, Time-line and Budgeting.   Classification of Shots, Role of Audio. Television News Production, Scripting for TV. Editing: Linear and Non-linear, Voice Over, Dubbing, Mixing and Final Mastering.

Module - III

A Brief History of Indian Cinema. Film Technology:  Elements of Film—Script, Cinematography, Editing, Music in Cinema. Process of Film Making—Shooting, Editing, Dubbing, Mixing, Married Print. Film Genres, Art and Commercial films, Parallel cinema. Film Review and Criticism, Script Writing for Documentaries. NFDC, FTII.

Module-IV
Legal Aspects of Motion Pictures: Contempt of Court Act, Indecent Representation of Women Prohibition Act, Censorship Act, Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, Law of Defamation. Official Secrets Act, Right to Know, Right to Information Act, 2005. Cyber Laws, Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright Act. Right to Privacy.

Module -V

Media Economics: Structure of Media Organizations, Types of Media Ownerships, Advertising as a source of Revenue, Market driven Media, Content as a commodity, FDI in Indian Media

Projects:

  • Script Writing: In this project students will develop scripts for films
  • News Script Writing: In this project students will develop scripts for News Bulletins
  • Lighting: Students will read and arrange lights in studio and field shooting
  • Dubbing and Mixing: Students will dub voice and they will mix it
  • Story Boarding and Shooting: They will shoot in Field and studio environments using proper cinematographic compositions matching to story board aligned with script
  • Editing: Students will do audio visual Editing using different editing techniques of editing to produce the desired product
  • They will Research and produce Documentary Scripts
