Course Objectives

  • To understand basic biotechnological concepts and  biotechnological applications for enhancing production through sustainable eco-friendly culture.
  • To understand basic bioinformatics and various in silico approches used in the field of  biotechnology

Course Outcomes

CO1: To understand the fundamentals of biotechnology and bioinformatics:PO1,PO2

CO2:To understand various molecular techniques for species identification, gene manipulation and immunological aspects for  aquaculture:PO1,PO2

CO3:To demonstrate the applications of biological databases  for molecular visualization and sequence analysis:PO1,PO2,PO6

PO1:Knowledge enhancement: Enhanced knowledge on concepts, essentialfacts, basics, principles and theories relating to fishery biology, biodiversity and aquatic environment, aquaculture, fish nutrition, fish physiology, genetics and biotechnology, fish processing, fisheries engineering, fish microbiology, fishery extension, economics, and biostatistics.

PO2:Professional and Entrepreneurial Skill development: Understanding the value and processes of life-long learning and professional enhancement and entrepreneurship development.

PO6:Data Handling and computational skills: Collect, analyze and interpret biological and scientific data for the scientific and farming community with the help of computer-based programmes.

Course Syllabus

Theory
Biotechnology: Introduction to Biotechnology –scope and importance in fisheries/aquaculture; Structural organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. Nucleic acids -structure, function and types, Concepts of gene and genetic code, transcription and translation, mutations and their implications. Post transcriptional modification and RNA processing. Gene regulation and expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; DNA sequencing, Operons. Genetic engineering- Restriction enzymes; Gene isolation; Cloning vectors; Probes; Recombinant DNA technology – vaccines. Transgenic fish and Gene transfer technology, Animal Cell Culture, Hybridoma technology. Molecular and immunological techniques – PCR; immunoblotting; ELISA; Principle of hybridization; Northern blotting; Western blotting; Southern blotting; DNA fingerprinting; Restriction fragment length polymorphism., Biosensors. Concept of bioremediation of water, bioprocess engineering and bioprospecting.Genomics
Bioinformatics: Introduction to Bioinformatics; Biological Databases and tools :Introduction; Types of biological databases; Primary and secondary databases; PDB, NCBI, formats and contents; Sequence retrieval, manipulation; Primer design; Restriction mapping; ORF finding; EMBOSS, Molecular visualization Sequence analysis.

Practicals
Study of structure of prokaryot and Eukaoryt Cells. Study on Model of protein Synthesis, Study of models rDNA Technology, Cell Culture, Isolation of Nucleic Acids, Restriction enzymes, Gel Electrophorus, ELISA, DNA sequence analysis and comparison.

Mr Zahoor Mushtaq is working as Assistant Professor in school of fisheries at Centurion University of Technology and management. He  has completed BFSc from SKUAST-Kashmir and MFSc in Aquatic Animal Health Management  from ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai.  His research interests are  fish pathology , immunology and molecular biology.
