Course Objectives

1. Familiarization to the principles, materials, and tools required for RAC technician
2. Develop an end-to-end technical understanding to execute RAC technician
3. Understand the test and commissioning process of RAC technician
4. Complying to the industry specifications, guidelines and safety standards during work

Learning Outcomes

1. Implement the knowledge of the basics of electricity, electronics and RAC
2. Concept about load calculation and installation of RAC equipment
3. Comply with the safety procedures and standards to be followed
4. Prioritizing activities and organizing resources to meet desired outcome

Course Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to RAC (3hrs)

Importance of the trade in domestic, industrial & commercial fields. Industrial safety & fire fighting, occupational health & safety. Allied trade knowledge. Basic fitting, welding, sheet metal work. Concept of shop floor layout of the trade, AC Induction Motor – single phase (split phase, capacitor, shaded pole, repulsion) & three phase (squirrel cage & slip ring).

Practice-Introduction, orientation & familiarization with the equipments, tools & materials.
Use of fire fighting equipments, Different gas cylinder handling procedure, Handling of HC refrigerants & safety observation.
Do & Don’ts in RAC shop.

Module 2:Basic electronics and electrical in RAC (4hrs)

AC Induction Motor – single phase (split phase, capacitor, shaded pole, repulsion) & three phase (squirrel cage & slip ring). Basic Electronics. Concept of Semi conductor, Rectifier, Transistor , FET, Mosfet, Bipolar Transistors, IGBT( Integated Bi-polar Transistor) , IC, Thermister, transducer, function.Concept of Microprocessor, PLC,Regulated Power supplies, SMPS.
Practice: Test different types electrical controls and circuits. Test different types of motors. AC Induction Motor – single phase (split phase, capacitor, shaded pole,
repulsion)
Practice: Identification and Testing of resisters, diodes, transistors , regulated power supplies and (Switched Mode Power Supply) SMPS. Making of Half Wave and Full Wave rectification and Testing.

Module 3: Major components used in RAC systems (6hrs)

Function, construction, application of domestic and commercial applications. Types of compressor used in domestic appliances Reciprocating Rotary Scroll screw etc.
Practice- Faults finding and remedial measures of components used in RAC systems.
Practice- Dismantling and assembling of various types of Compressors like Reciprocating ,
Rotary, Scroll etc
Practice- Dismantle and assemble of Open type and sealed type compressors, blower motors, check bearing/ bush, centrifugal switch.
Practice- Check worn out parts, inspect and measure clearance, diameter by micrometer, vernier calipers etc. replace
and compensate lubricant in compressor

Module 4:Industrial RAC testing and maintenance

Types of condenser used in domestic appliances Water cooled, Air cooled Evaporative etc Introduction about commercial plants, Automobile AC, Function of individual components. Refrigerants used & retrofitting of old car / Mobile AC’s
Practice- Cu-Al brazing technique.
Practice- Compare the performance of single, double ,multi feeding evaporators.
Practice- Compare different diameter & length of capillary with Performance. Use anti
freezing thermostat.

Project -Phase 1 (12hrs)

Maintenance of the AC and fault detection.

Module 5: Window AC, Split, & Package AC description Advantage & application

Practice- Testing of electrical components used in Window & Split Air Conditioners, Electrical Wiring testing etc.
Practice- System processing (cleaning, flushing, Dehydrating, assembling, leak testing,
Evacuating, charging & testing).
Practice- Test and diagnosis faults of Car A/C system.
Practice- Pressure test/leak of the system. Strip the component parts. Cleaning Flushing leak testing , evacuating and charging & use of suitable chemicals (Trichloro Ethylene) for more
contaminated coils.

Project- Phase 2(13hrs)

Optimization of RAC system with its load and cooling

Project - Phase 3(3hrs)

Layout of AC Plant, ice plant, cold storage( total system with components description)
List of Projects (One project is to be chosen by group of students. Maximum group size is 4)
