Course Objectives

  • Basic understanding of shipboard operations on Deck.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understands the basic ships operation and Navigational watchkeeping duties.
  • The operation of Lifesaving and Fire Fighting appliances.
  • Practical knowledge of Shipboard maintenance
  • Demonstrate good working knowledge of a Seaman’s duties and responsibilities, as described in relevant sections of the Code of Safe Working Practices (COSWP).
  • Demonstrate Practical Rope Work.

Course Syllabus

Module I

  1. a) Know the meaning of the common nautical terms.

 

  1. b) The various parts of the ship, for example, decks, compartments, ballast tanks, air pipes, pipeline

systems.

 

  1. c) Knowledge of the correct use of ensigns, courtesy flags and international single letter flags.

 

  1. d) Report bearings of objects or lights in degrees or points on the bow, using compass cards in 360

degree notation.

 

  1. e) Understanding helm orders and the ability to communicate with the officer of the watch on matters

relevant to watch-keeping duties.

  1. f) Procedures for the relief, maintenance and hand over of a watch and the information needed to

maintain a safe watch.

  1. g) Knowledge of the use of lifesaving and fire-fighting appliances as follows;
  • Importance of musters and drills and know what action to take on hearing alarm signals;
  • General arrangements and dangers of fixed smothering systems;
  • Correct operation, precautions and dangers of lifeboat release gear;
  • Procedures for boat preparation and launching;
  • Precautions to be observed when maintaining lifeboats and davits;
  • Fire and watertight doors.
  • Shipboard organization, anchoring and mooring arrangements

 

          Practice

  • Integrated series of formal lectures, videos, group discussions and tutorials

 

Module II:

  • Pilot ladders, gangways, access points.
  • Cargo – Hatch covers, derricks and cranes, blocks and tackles, containers and securing arrangements etc
  • Safety – Code Of Safe Practice For Merchant Seaman(COSWOP), IMO safety signs, enclosed spaces, fire extinguishers, lifeboat and life raft launching

 

          Practice

  • Integrated series of formal lectures, videos, group discussions and tutorials

 

Module III:

  • Seamanship – Rope types and construction, knots, bends and hitches, rigging a boson’s chair and stage, rope and wire splicing, whipping and seizing, parceling and serving
