Course objective

  • To impart knowledge regarding the chemical periodicity of elements
  • To understand the structure bonding in compounds along with the concepts of acids and bases.
  • To have sound understanding of coordination chemistry and their applications.
  • To get concepts of nuclear chemistry

Syllabus

Module I                                                                                                              (4 hours)

Chemical periodicity:  periodic trends in properties of elements - atomic radii, ionic radii, inert gas radii, Ionization enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy, electronegativity, valency.

Module II                                                                                                             (4 hours)

Valence electrons, ionic bond, covalent bond, bond parameters, Lewis structure, polar character of covalent bond, covalent character of ionic bond, valence bond theory, resonance, geometry of covalent molecules, VSEPR theory, concept of hybridization involving s, p and d orbitals and shapes of some simple molecules, molecular orbital theory of homonuclear diatomic molecules(qualitative idea only), Hydrogen bond.

Module III:                                                                                                                   (3 hours)

Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis theory of acids and bases, Acid-Base strengths.  Hard-Soft acid base concept, Relative acidity and basicity, Substituent effects on acidity and basicity. Non-aqueous solvents.

Module IV                                                                                                                   (6 hours)

Main group Chemistry

Bent rule and energetics of hybridization, Walsh diagrams (tri-and penta-atomic  bonds, some simple reactions of covalently bonded molecules), d Wade's rule, Styx number, carboranes, isolobal analogy, Lipscom topology, applications of boron compounds, synthesis and structures of S-N cyclic compounds.

 

Module V:                                                                                                            (4 hours)

Coordination chemistry and Reaction mechanism

Crystal Field Theory and its limitations, Elementary idea of Angular overlap model, -p and s Molecular orbital theory for octahedral, tetrahedral and square planar complexes,  bonding in molecular orbital theory. Energy profile of a reaction, reactivity of metal complexes, inert and labile complexes, kinetic applications of valence bond and crystal field theories, kinetics of octahedral substitution. Acid hydrolysis, factors affecting acid hydrolysis, base hydrolysis, conjugate base mechanism, direct and indirect evidences in favor of conjugate mechanism, anion reactions,                                                                      

Module VI: Inner transition elements: spectral and magnetic properties     (6 hours)

Spectroscopic ground states, correlation, Orgel and Tanabe-Sugano diagrams for transition metal complexes (d1 –d 9  parameters, charge transfer states), calculations of Dq, B and  spectra, spectroscopic method of assignment of absolute configuration in optically active metal chelates and their stereo-chemical information, anomalous magnetic moments, magnetic exchanges coupling and spin crossover.

Catalysis and green chemistry: concepts, applications.

 Module VII:                                                                                                             (3 hours)

Nuclear chemistry: nuclear reactions, fission and fusion, radio-analytical
techniques and activation analysis.

 

Practice

  1. Qualitative analysis of mixtures having upto three acid radicals
  2. Qualitative analysis of mixtures having upto three basic radicals
  3. Identification of less common metal ions Mo, W, Ti, V, Zr, U (two metal ions in cationic / anionic forms), insoluble-oxides, sulphates and halides may be included.
  4. Gravimetric Estimation of Barium.
  5. Estimation of Fe(II) titrimetrically with potassium permanganate.
  6. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts.
  7. Synthesis of iron oxide nanostructure by bio template mediated approach.
  8. Synthesis of transition metal (Cu, Zn,Co) complex and structure elucidation.
