Course Objectives

  • Understanding fundamental principles for environmental analytical methods.

  • To point out suitable analytical techniques for analyzing a specific compounds in an environmental matrix.

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, the students will be able to gain knowledge on:

Course Syllabus

Module-I                                                                                                                      

Water Analysis: Introduction to analytical chemistry and its application Lime-Soda, Zeolite and Ion exchange methods. Removal of DO and dissolvedCO2 from water by De-aeration method, Desalination of Brackish water by Reverse osmosis and electro dialysis process, Numerical on calculation of Temporary and Permanent hardness of water, Lime-Soda calculation

  1. Determination of hardness of water by EDTA
  2. Determination of alkalinity of water
  3. Determination of Dissolved Oxygen in
  4. Determination of Biological Oxygen
  5. Determination of Chemical Oxygen

Module-II    

Soil Analysis: Soil profile, Structure, and Soil properties, Determination of soil properties.

Practice

  1. Determination of specific gravity of the soil by using
  2. Determination of pH and electrical conductivity of soil
  3. Determination of moisture content in soil by oven drying method.

Module-III

Fuel Analysis: Fuel, Classification of fuel, calorific value: gross and net calorific values, Determination of calorific value by bomb calorimeter, Proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and their importance, Numerical on calculation of calorific value and proximate and ultimate analysis of fuel.

  1. Determination of calorific value of a fuel sample by using Bomb calorimeter

Module-IV

Petroleum: its chemical composition and fractional distillation, cracking of heavy oil residues – thermal and catalytic cracking, Knocking, Octane number, Synthesis and applications of bio- fuels, Photovoltaic cell.

Module-V

Electrochemical Phenomenon: Electrochemical cell, Electrode potential , Determination of pH of a solution Using Clomel/ Quin Hydrone Electrode, Corrosion-Mechanisms and its type, Factors affecting Corrosion; Protection from corrosion

Practice

  1. Estimation of ferrous ion in the given solution using standard potassium dichromate.

Module-VI

Error in Chemical analysis: Types of errors, Accuracy and precision, Absolute and relative uncertainty, mean and standard deviation.
