Course Name : Green method in chemistry

Code(Credit) : CUTM 3150 (0-3-1)

Course objectives

  • To reduce the chemical-related impact on human health and elimination of contaminants through, sustainable prevention programs.
  • Building a mindset of the learners serve society in their professional capacity as researchers, scientists, and professionals
  • Enhancing employability through the developed skill.

Learning outcome: After successful completion of the course, students will be able to

CO1 Define the various aspects of analytical chemistry and their utilities.
CO2 Explain the concepts regarding the parameters for determining water purification level.
CO3 Apply the skills gained in determination of hardness, conductivity and purity level of domestic water.
CO4 Analyze the pH, biological oxygen demand, conductivity, dissolved oxygen etc in water samples also soil standards.
CO5 Evaluate the water and soil standard for different domestic as well as industrial uses.

Module I

Practice 1. Getting familiarized with the concepts of Green Chemistry, its goals, and needs.

Module II

Practice 2: Being acquainted with the use of green chemistry for sustainable development of energy sources (renewable, non-renewable energy sources)

Practice 3: Preparation of biodiesel from vegetable/ waste cooking oil.

Module III

Practice 4: Practical approach to renewable feed stocks with maximum utilization of renewable and biological materials.

Practice 5: Preparation of propene from 1-propanol + conc. sulphuric acid

Module IV

Practice 6: Familiarizing with industrial catalysts, chemicals, and polymer productions

Practice 7: Benzoin condensation using Thiamine Hydrochloride as a catalyst instead of cyanide.

Module V

Practice 8: Practical approach to green chemistry in extraction processes

Practice 9: Extraction of D-limonene from orange peel.

 Module VI

Practice 10: Using green solvents and familiarizing with solvent free processes.

Practice 11: Solvent free, ultrasound-assisted one-pot synthesis of phthalocyanine complex of copper (II).

 Module VII

Practice 12:  Practical approach to the green synthesis of nanomaterials using plant extracts.

Practice 13: Preparation and characterization of nanoparticles of gold using tea leaves

In addition, students have to do some project work and submit it through a thesis.
