Course Name : Production Technology for Vegetable and Spices

Course Objectives

To educate in details about the  production technology of vegetables and spices.

Learning Outcomes

• To learn about the importance of vegetables and spices crops

• To understand the scientific cultivation methods of vegetables and spices

• To study about the different forms of Classification of Vegetables

• To know in details about the types of vegetable gardening with special reference to kitchen gardening

• To know more about origin, area, climate, soil, improved varieties and cultivation practices such as time and methods of sowing, transplanting techniques, planting distance, fertilizer requirements, irrigation, weed management, harvesting and yield.

• To learn about the Physiological disorders of important vegetable and spices

• To study the crops like

Solanaceous vegetables: Tomato, brinjal, Chilli and Capsicum

Curcurbits: Cucumber, Bitter gourd, Bottle gourd, Pumpkin, Ridge gourd, Sponge gourd, Watermelon and Muskmelon

Cole crops: Cabbage, Cauliflower and Knol-khol

Okra

Peas and Beans: Cowpea, French bean and Cluster bean

Bulb crops: Onion and Garlic

Root crops: Carrot, radish and Beet root

Tuber crops: Sweet potato, Potato and Tapioca

Leafy vegetables: Amaranthus and Spinach

Perennial Vegetables: Drumstick and Pointed gourd

Major Spices: Black pepper, Cardamom, Turmeric Ginger and Cinnamon

Seed Spices: Cumin, Fenugreek, Fennel and Corainder

Theory

Importance of vegetables & spices in human nutrition and national economy, brief about origin, area, production, improved varieties and cultivation practices such as time of sowing, sowing, transplanting techniques, planting distance, fertilizer requirements, irrigation, weed management, harvesting, storage, physiological disorders, disease and pest control and seed production of important vegetable and spices.

Practical

Identification of vegetables & spices crops and their seeds. Nursery raising. Direct seed sowing and transplanting.Study of morphological characters of different vegetables & spices.Fertilizers applications.Raising of nursery of vegetables & spices. Vegetables & spices seed extraction. Harvesting & preparation for market.Economics of vegetables and spices cultivation.
