COURSE OBJECTIVES :
1.Understand the Structure and Function of PACU -To familiarize students with the physical layout, staffing, equipment, and operational protocols of a Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
2.Monitor and Manage Postoperative Patients -To enable students to effectively monitor vital signs, level of consciousness, airway patency, and manage immediate post-anesthesia complications.
3.Recognize and Respond to Post-Anesthesia Complications- To develop skills in identifying and assisting in the management of common complications such as hypoxia, hypotension, nausea, vomiting, and delayed emergence.
- Ensure Patient Safety and Comfort in the PACU - To train students in techniques and protocols that promote patient safety, comfort, privacy, and psychological support during the recovery phase.
- Collaborate with the Multidisciplinary Team - To enhance the ability of anesthesia technicians to work efficiently with anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgeons in providing high-quality postoperative care.
COURSE OUTCOMES :
CO1: Demonstrate Knowledge of PACU Protocols and Equipment- Students will be able to describe the setup, equipment, and standard operating procedures in a PACU environment.
CO2: Perform Effective Postoperative Monitoring and Care - Students will be able to assist in monitoring patients' vital signs and recovery status, ensuring safe transition from anesthesia to full consciousness.
CO3: Identify and Assist in Managing Post-Anesthetic Complications - Students will be able to recognize early signs of common post-anesthesia complications and provide appropriate support under supervision.
CO4: Communicate and Coordinate with the Healthcare Team- Students will demonstrate effective communication skills and teamwork in coordinating postoperative care with anesthesiologists, nurses, and other medical staff.

Setting up of PACU- Definition of PACU, Set up Staff/patient ratio, Monitoring in PACU, Admission and discharge criteria, Criteria for Shifting into PACU, Aldred score, Discharge criteria, Fast tracking
MODULE-II
Post Operative Complications And Its Management
Airway obstruction, desideration, bronchospasm, laryngospasm, Unresponsiveness
Neurological complications. - Coma, seizures, CVA(stroke), cerebral hypoxia,
Pulmonary edema, Haemorrhage from the surgical site, vascular complications-. DVT, embolism,(thrombus, air, fat, amniotic)
Trauma to teeth, Headache, Backache, Ocular complications -loss of vision
MODULE-III
Shock-Anaphylactic shock, hypovolemic shock management

MODULE-VI: Causes of mortality in PACU- * Mortality -myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, hypoxia, electrolyte imbalance, massive haemorrhage, embolism.
MODULE VII: Fluid Therapy * Fluid and electrolytes * Blood and blood components * Plasma
* Allergies and reactions and its management * Informed consent * Use of body tissue and organ transplant * Records in OT , medico-legal cases
