Course Objectives

  • The Powder Metallurgy course is to prepare students for careers into the emerging technology of powder metallurgy as an effective and profitable material processing route to produce a variety of products for engineering industries.
  • The course provides detailed knowledge of powder production and processing as well as to choose the right method to suit application in hand.

Learning Outcomes

After learning the course the students should be able to:

  • Acquire the knowledge of Powder Metallurgy, understand the application in various fields of powder metallurgy and its importance.
  • Acquainted the knowledge of powder metallurgical processing
  • Aware about the powder characterisation techniques.
  • Explain the mechanism of sintering and types sintering for development of mechanical properties.
  • Understand causes of defects in Powder metallurgy processed materials and method to minimize defects.

Course Syllabus

Module-1:                                                                                

Introduction to powder metallurgy:

Fundamental Steps for Powder Metallurgy, Advantages and Applications of Powder Metallurgy., Basic steps for powder metallurgy

Module -2:                                                                             

Characteristic of powder:

Chemical composition, Size, shape and size distribution of the Particles, Density, Flow Rate of the Powder Mass

Module-3:                                                                                

Metal powder production methods

Crushing, Milling, Condensation of metal vapour, Mechanical Alloying, Atomization,  Reduction from oxide

 Module-4:                                                                                

Powder characterisation:

 Powder conditioning, fundamentals of powder compaction, density distribution in green compacts, compressibility, green Strength,

Module-5:                                                                                

Powder compaction methods

Basic aspects, types of compaction presses, compaction tolling and role of lubricants, single and double die compaction, isostatic pressing, hot pressing

Module-6:                                                                                

Sintering  and defects

Definition, stages, effect of variables, sintering atmospheres and furnaces, Mechanism, Defects in Powder metallurgy processed materials and their processing to minimize defects

Module-7:                                                                                

Application of powder metallurgy (case study)

Processing of aluminium, aluminum-graphene composite, Microstructure analysis  of sintered products by Scanning electron microscope, Hardness study of sintered products

 

      Practices     

  1. Fabrication of nano powder of material by ball milling technique/or any suitable route
  2. Study of particle shape and size distribution in powder processed material
  3. To perform powder compaction of different metal powder by hydraulic press.
  4. Effect of sintering conditions on hardness of powder processed material
  5. Crystal structure and crystallite size analysis of material prepared by powder metallurgy route by X-ray diffraction
  6. Micro structural analysis and identification of defects in the sintered material by scanning electron microscopy.

Tentative Project                                                  

  1. Characterise materials and carry out work on finding advanced materials prepared by powder metallurgy route for different industrial applications
  2. Study of particle shape and size distribution of nano powder by ball milling technique/or any suitable route
  3. Preparation and characterisation of aluminium-reduced graphene oxide composites
  4. Preparation and characterisation of alumina-reduced graphene oxide composites
  5. Study the effect of sintering on the material processed by powder metallurgical route
  6. Study the effect of powder compaction and density on the material processed by powder metallurgical route
