Course Name : Tractor and Automotive Engine

Course Objectives

  • Study of internal combustion engine specially a tractor engine keeping a view of upcoming trades and identify different components of each systems of internal combustion .

Course Outcomes

  • CO1. Provided knowledge about different types of engines for enhancing skill of students(PO1,PO2,PO6,PO11,PO12) .
    CO2. Knowledge about working principle of different systems of internal combustion engines and tractor, used for employability and higher study (PO1, PO2, PO11,PO12) .
    CO3.Enhancing skill of students by study the problem solving methods for adjustment of different engine systems (PO2,PO6,PO8,PO12).

    Programme Outcomes (POs)

    PO1 (Engineering knowledge): Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and to understand and solve the complex agricultural engineering problems.
    PO2 (Problem analysis): Identify, formulate, review literature and analyze agriculture engineering problems to design, conduct experiments, analyze data and interpret data.
    PO6 (The engineer and society): Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to agricultural engineering practice
    PO8 (Ethics): Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the agricultural engineering practice
    PO11 (Project Management and finance): Demonstrate knowledge & understanding of the agricultural engineering principles and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments in agricultural engineering
    PO12 (Life- long learning): Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and lifelong learning in the broadest context of technological change pertaining to agricultural engineering.

Course Syllabus

MODULE-I(6 Hours)
• Study of sources of farm power –conventional & non-conventional energy sources
• Classification of tractors and IC engines
• Study of engine components their construction, operating principles and functions.
• Study of mechanical, thermal and volumetric efficiencies.
• Study of engine strokes and comparison of and CI and SI engines
• 6-stroke engine- its importance and functions.
PRACTICE(8 Hours):-
1. Recent improvements in design of an IC engine
2. Bharat 6 Engines-its importance
3. Study of 6 stroke cycle engines, its importance and function.
4. Calculation of engine power and comparison of different tractors based open the power value and study of each components that creates the differences
MODULE-II(5 Hours)
• Study of Engine Valve systems
• Study of importance of air cleaning system.
• Study of fuels, properties of fuels, calculation of air-fuel ratio.
• Study of tests on fuel for SI and CI engines.
• Study of carburetion system, carburetors and their main functional components.
PRACTICE(2 Hours):-

1. Study of fuel injection system, fuel injection pump and engine governing
MODULE-III(4 Hours)
• Study of fuel injection system
• What is Bharat 6 Engine- Its importance and comparison between Bharat-4 and Bharat-6 engine?
• Engine governing – need of governors, governor types and governor characteristics.
• Study of lubrication system
PRACTICE(1.5 Hours):-
1. Study of lubrication & engine governing system
MODULE-IV(5 Hours)
• Engine cooling system
• Study of need and type of thermostat valves
• Study of ignition system of SI engines.
• Study of electrical system in engine
• Familiarization with the basics of engine testing
