Course Objectives

To give the students overall idea about:

-Proper use of all available resources of a watershed for optimum production with minimum hazards to natural resources.
-Relate interdisciplinary topics such as the use of public policies, regulations, and management tools to effectively manage water resources for a sustainable future.

Session 1

A watershed is an area of land that feeds all the water running under it and draining off of it into a body of water. It combines with other watersheds to form a network of rivers and streams that progressively drain into larger water areas. Topography determines where and how water flows.

SESSION 2

Watershed characteristics such as size, slope, shape, drainage density, land use/land cover, geology and soils, and vegetation are important factors affecting various aspects of runoff.

Soil, water and vegetation are the three important natural resources.
As these resources are interdependent there is a need to have a unit of management for most effective and useful management of these resources.

Watershed management serves to integrate planning for land and water; it takes into account both ground and surface water flow, recognizing and planning for the interaction of water, plants, animals and human land use found within the physical boundaries of a watershed.

SESSION 5

Coding of watershed is done to fix a kind of identity based on some specific features. It is carried out by several ways, viz. in digits, combination of letters and digits or by using the name of stream associated with the watershed.

Session 9

Drylands are defined by a scarcity of water. Drylands are zones where precipitation is balanced by evaporation from surfaces and by transpiration by plants (evapotranspiration).

Soil and climatic parameters with special emphasis on rainfall characteristics; constraints limiting crop production in dry land areas; types of drought, characterization of environment for water availability; crop planning for erratic and aberrant weather conditions. Stress physiology and resistance to drought, adaptation of crop plants to drought, drought management strategies; preparation of appropriate crop plans for dry land areas; mid contingent plan for aberrant weather conditions.
