Course Objectives

The objective of the course is

To Identify the tree species and the uses of NTFP.
To Gain knowledge about the choice of tree species for agro forestry purpose.
To Estimate the quantity of timber / firewood/NTFP(volume/weight) and other forest resources by using height and volume measuring equipments.
To Manage the forest nursery by applying nursery techniques.
To Apply the required cultivation practices for different tree species.

Course Outcome

CO1- Course gives a wide spread knowledge of identification and value assessment

of tree.

CO2-Choice of tree for Agroforestry purpose and forest nursery

CO3-Choice of Required cultivation practices for different tree species.

THEORY

Introduction – definitions of basic terms related to forestry
Silviculture and objectives of silviculture, forest classification
Salient features of Indian Forest Policies
Forest regeneration, Natural regeneration - natural regeneration from seed
Natural regeneration from vegetative parts and coppicing, pollarding, root suckers
Artificial regeneration - objectives, choice between natural and artificial regeneration, essential preliminary considerations.
Crown classification. Tending operations – weeding, cleaning
Thinning – mechanical, ordinary, crown and advance thinning
Forest Mensuration – objectives, diameter measurement, instruments used in diameter measurement
Non instrumental methods of height measurement - shadow and single pole method
Instrumental methods of height measurement - geometric and trigonometric principles
Instruments used in height measurement; tree stem form, form factor, form quotient
Measurement of volume of felled and standing trees
Age determination of trees
Agro forestry – definitions, importance
Criteria of selection of trees in agro forestry
Different agro forestry systems prevalent in the country
Shifting cultivation, taungya, alley cropping, wind breaks and shelter belts, home garden.
Cultivation practices of important fast growing tree species of the region :Acacia auriculoformis
Cultivation practices of important fast growing tree species of the region: Eucalyptus tereticornis
