Course Description

Medical Laboratory Technology is also known as clinical laboratory science which helps diagnose, treat, and prevent disease through clinical laboratory tests. It is complementary to medical science. It involves an analysis of body fluid and waste products. The professionals find out the reason percentage of physiological disorder and infectious disorder. These professionals, medical lab technicians, and technologists play an important role in collecting information, sampling, testing, reporting, and documenting medical investigations.

Medical Technician work covers areas such as:

Clinical Chemistry (chemical analysis of body fluids), Hematology (blood-related), Immunology (the study of the immune system), Microbiology (the study of bacteria and other disease organisms), Cytotechnology (the study of human tissue), Phlebotomy, Urine analysis, Coagulation, Parasitology, Blood Sample Matching, Drug Efficacy Tests, Serology.

• Subject Type: Theory+Practice
• The pre-requisite for a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technician is 10+2 with science (Biology) subjects or equivalent from a recognized University or Board. Certificate courses for Lab Technician careers which needs 10+2 with Biology subjects. Courses are by colleges, universities as well as Medical College. 
• The duration of the course is One and Half Months. The weekly duration of practice is to be done on campus or online:
• Online: Theory
• Campus: Practice (Per week 4hrs)
• Faculty: For eligibility as a faculty for a certificate course in MLT, a person should have a minimum qualification of DMLT (with 5 Years Experience)/ B. Sc. MLT (with 3 Years Experience).

Course Objectives

• To train the students to carry out laboratory investigations accurately. 
• Provide reliable reports to facilitate proper diagnosis and prognosis of diseases.
• To make awareness of the principles underlying the organization of a Clinical Laboratory, specialties of Medical Laboratory Technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this certificate course in Medical Laboratory Technician, the student should be able to:

• Perform routine clinical laboratory procedures
• Demonstrate technical skills, social behavior, and professional awareness.
• Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
• Calculate and properly report laboratory data.
• Interpret laboratory results in accordance with laboratory protocol.
• Utilizing appropriate quality control and safety procedures.

Course Syllabus

Module 1:

Theory: Introduction to Medical Laboratory Technology ( 3hr)

Practice- Good health practice and Quality Control in the clinical lab.

Module 2:

Theory: Demonstration of the basic equipment of clinical laboratory ( 6 hrs)

Practice- Operate Instruments (Centrifuge, Colorimeter, Microscope, Microtome, Laminar Airflow, Hemocytometer, Hemometer, Autoclave, Hot Air Oven)

Module 3:

Theory:

Theory: General consideration on specimen collection (3 hrs)

Practice- Demonstration on Specimen collection

Module 4:

Theory: Urine Analysis  (12hrs)

Practice- Practice the different types of methods used in the examination of Urine. (Physical, Microscopical and Chemical examination)

Module 5:

Theory: Stool Analysis  (3 hrs)

Practice- Practice different types of methods used in the examination of Stool (RE & ME).

Module 6:  

Theory: Sputum analysis  (3 hrs)

Practice- Practice different types of method used in the examination of Sputum and special reference to AFB

Module 7:

Theory: Semen analysis   (3hrs)

Practice: Practice different types of methods used in the examination of Semen.

Module 8:

Theory: Serological Tests (3hrs)

Practice: Practice different types of Serological Tests in the Laboratory.

Module 9:

Theory: Composition and function of blood & Demonstration of  Complete Blood Cell Count (CBC) ( 3 hrs)

Practice: Practice handling and operating of Complete Blood Cell Count ( CBC Analyzer)

 Module 10:

Theory: Basic of the blood bank and blood grouping (3hrs)

Practice: Practice Blood grouping & Rh Factor

Module 11:

Theory: Demonstration of  ESR and BT - CT( 3hrs)

Practice:  Practice Erythrocyte sedimentation rate test and Bleeding time/clotting time

Module 12:

Theory: Gram staining and ZN Staining (3 hrs)

Practice: Practice Gran stain and ZN stain

Module 13:

Theory: Basic of Culture Media (3 hrs)

Practice: Practice & know about the different Media Preparation in Laboratory,

Module 14:

Theory: Fundamental Biochemistry Profile Test (3 hrs)

Practice: Examination of Liver function, Kidney function, and Lipid by collection Serum from a Blood sample

Module 15:

Theory: Basic diabetes and laboratory Investigation (3hrs)

Practice: Examination of Sugar from Blood and Urine sample

Module 16:

Theory: Biomedical waste management & Lab Safety (3hrs)

Practice: To gain an understanding of the importance of proper and safe disposal of bio-medical waste & treatment, To gain an understanding of categories of bio-medical waste, To learn about the disposal of bio-medical waste – colour coding, types of containers, transportation of waste, etc.
