Course Objectives

  • • HPC introduces the concepts of parallel and distributed computing. Parallel Computing is used to improve performance of Multi-core Machine using Open MP and Open MPI Programming.
    • The students will learn the basic concepts and technology of parallel, distributed and Cloud Computing. The participant will get hands-on- experience on Open MP, Open MP Programming and Virtualization in Cloud Computing.

Learning Outcomes


• Write Parallel Program using OpenMP

• Understand the basics of Cluster, Grid Computing and how to minimize execution time of Program and
Maximize throughput

• Understand data dependencies and how to eliminate dependency in Program

Module I: Parallel Computing (5T+4P) Hrs

Introduction to Parallel programming concepts and their classifications , Flynn’s Classification , Structural Classification , Classification Based on Grain Size , Examples of Parallel Computations
Practice-1
To study the basic commands of Linux.
Practice-2
To establish Beowulf Cluster using MPI(Message Passing Interface) Library.
Module II: Cluster Computing (5T+6P) Hrs

Introduction to Cluster Computing, Motivation behind Cluster Computing, Applications ,Advantages, Scalable Parallel Computer Architectures; Cluster Computer and its Architecture, Challenges ,Classifications, Components for Clusters, Cluster Middleware and Single System Image, Resource Management and Scheduling (RMS)
Practice-3
Installation and configuration of Alchemi Grid.
Practice-4
Running a sample application on Alchemi Grid and analysing it.
Practice-5
To study a Grid Simulation Toolkit.
Module III: Grid Computing (5T+6P) Hrs

An overview of Grid Computing, Virtual Organizations, Architecture, Applications, Computational Data, Desktop and Enterprise Grids, Data-intensive Applications
