Course Description

This is a skill oriented course to provide hands-on practice and project work in the study of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, systems and it's equipment's such as: solar cells, modules, charge controller, inverter, battery and electrical/electronics/mechanical appliances.

Specialized for Design, Installation and O&M of solar PV systems.

This course encompasses National Occupational Standards (NOS) and aligned with NSQF level 4 of “Solar PV Installer,"Qualification Pack (Suryamitra SGJ/Q0101) issued by Sector: “Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ) of India”.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this subject are:
• To develop an understanding of solar energy, requirements, applications and challanges.
• To enable and understand sustainable development goals (SDGs) and their socio-economic value for our society.
• To create awareness about the technology, design, principles, skills, and equipment required for a solar PV system.
• To facilitate in developing an end-to-end technical understanding to execute Solar PV installation, operation and maintenance.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this programme:
• The student will be exposed to current solar PV technology, applications, challenges and oppertunities.
• The student will able to develop and understanding of perspective on SDGs.
• The student will able to design and install an efficient Solar PV System.
• The student will implement to prioritizing activities and organizing resources to meet desired outcome of Skills/Placement/Higher studies.

Course Syllabus/Contents:

Module 1: Work Organization and Management (3 hours), SGJ/N0101
Overview and applications in multiple sectors, Work technical terminology and symbols, theory and applications of mathematics, physics, and geometry, Standards currently used and recognized by industry, Current internationally recognized standards, Health and safety legislation and best practice including specific safety.
Practice 1: Site visit to acquire knowledge on solar powered projects.

Module 2: Site survey and customer's requirement (6 hours), SGJ/N0101, ELE/N5903
Concept of site survey, customer requirements and satisfaction, technique for preparation of single line diagram (SLD).
Practice 2: Shadow analysis of a solar PV module.
Practice 3: Preparation of single line diagram (System layout) of a solar PV system.

Module 3: Basics of electrical, electronics and solar energy (6 hours), SGJ/N0101
Basic electricity, Ohm's law, electrical and electronics devices, concept of work, power and energy.
Practice 4: Identifying different types of components used in SPV system and carry out it's operation.
Practice 5: Perform simple calculation of power, energy, radiation etc.

Module 4: Basics of SPV system and components (15 hours), SGJ/N0101, SGJ/N0102
Concept of Solar PV system, technology and types, concept of solar cell, module, CCR, inverter, battery and it's operation.
Practice 6: Identify and specify mono, poly and thin film type of solar cell/panel.
Practice 7: Modeling and simulation/designing of solar PV module.
Practice 8: Identify and specify the lead acid, maintenance free, and Li-ion batter.y
Practice 9: Identify and specify the PWM & MPPT type CCR.
Practice 10: Identify and specify the different types of inverter.

Module 5: Design and installation of SPV system (12 hours), SGJ/N0103, SGJ/N0104
Load calculation and sizing of solar PV system, design and validation process of SPV system, steps involved in installation of SPV system.
Practice 11: Performance of solar PV module at varying tilt angle.
Practice 12: Design and validation of solar PV system.
Practice 13: Identify tools & tackles used for civil/mechanical/electrical installation.
Practice 14: Installation and connection practice of solar module, CCR, inverter, battery & appliances.

Module 6: Maintenance of SPV system (8 hours), SGJ/N0105 & ELE/N6001
Steps involved in testing & commissioning process, operation and maintenance of SPV system.
Practice 15: Conduct the testing of all the solar components of the solar PV system including fault finding, continuity checks, polarity check and other commissioning activities.
Practice 16: Carry out maintenance activities required for each component.
