SKILL -Mechatronics System Design

Code(Credit) : CUTM3049 (0-3-1)

Course Objectives

1. Understand key elements of Mechatronics system.
2. Understand principles of sensors, its characteristics, interfacing with controller.
3. Understand and develop the concept of PLC system and its ladder programming, and significance of PLC systems in industrial application.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identification of key elements of Mechatronics system and its representation in terms of block diagram or circuitry.
2. Understanding the concept of signal processing and use of interfacing systems such as Pneumatics system and PLC control.
3. Interfacing of Sensors, Actuators using appropriate controller.
4. Development of PLC ladder programming and implementation of real life system.

Course Syllabus

Module 1: Identification and familiarization of the following components: resistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, LED’s, transformer, function generator, multimeter, power supply. (6hrs)

Practice- To instruct students about application of different electrical & electronics components and measuring devices. Practice to be done by students on using of different electrical and electronics components and measuring devices like volt meter, ammeter and multimeter.

Module 2: Pneumatics and Electro-pneumatics. (21hrs)
Practice: To discuss about the fundamentals of Pneumatics& Electro-Pneumatics trainer kit
Practice: Understanding pneumatics, E-Pneumatics symbols and circuit drawings.
Practice: Perform a set of Experiments using the trainer kit and components with the help of circuit diagram.

Project -Phase 1 (6hrs)
Project Design Block diagram preparation, Component Selection, All Circuits Preparation, Assembling of Components

Module 3: PLC and Interfacing of Input/output (9hrs)
Practice- Demonstration of basic PLC, contacts, coils, timers and counters; motor drivers, Variable Frequency Drives and solenoid valves.
Practice- Demonstration of PLC programs using contacts, coils ,timers and counters.
Practice- Designing different logics using PLC programming.
Practice- Interfacing different input and output components with PLC, like different sensors, motors and actuators.

Project- Phase 2(6hrs)
Wiring of components, interfacing components with PLC, Program Preparation.

Module 4: Modular Production System (9hrs)
Practice- Demonstration of three different Modular Production System- (pick &place, testing, sorting ) (Construction and working)
Practice- Hands on session thorough operating and finding the working of different sensors, mechanism and program of the stations.

Project - Phase 3(3hrs)

Making the System operative with sensors, actuators and controllers; Maintenance of the system.

List of Projects (One project is to be chosen by group of students. Maximum group size is 4)

Session 1

Foundation (online)- AC , DC and types; MCB, RCCB, MPCB, Isolator, Types of switches.
Demo– To instruct students about AC, DC, application of different electrical components.
Practice- Practice to be done by students on using of different electrical components like switch gears, protective elements and contact elements.

Foundation (online)- Uses of appropriate tool , uses of Electronics components and measuring instruments.
Demo – To instruct students about application of different tools electronics components and measuring devices.

Demo – Demonstration of Actuation of a Single acting cylinder using 3/2pushbutton.
Practice – Hands-on session by students to actuate SAC with 3/2 PB on Pneumatic trainer kit.

Demo – Demonstration of Actuation of Double Acting Cylinder with 5/2 Solenoid valve using pushbuttons and latching relay on Electro pneumatic Kit.
Practice –Hands-on practice will be done by students of actuating DAC with 5/2 solenoid , PB and latching relay with illumination.
