Course Objectives

  • This course is offered to the students as this is the most important course which has significant field relevance along with storage conditions.
  • The farmers’ major problem is the insect pests of crops and their control. The students will be taught in such a way that they will be able to identify the insect pest, diagnose the symptom and advocate the necessary remedial measures.

Syllabus

Theory

Unit I: Introduction to the concept of pests, damage and loss due to insects; classification of pests (Seasonal, regular, vector pests, sporadic etc.). Pests of Field crops like Rice, Wheat, Maize, Sorghum, Finger millet; Commercial crops: Sugarcane, Tobacco and Cotton

 

Unit II: Insect pests of Pulses: Pea, Pigeon pea, Gram, Lentil, Rajmas, Cowpea, Soyabean, etc. Fibre crops: Cotton, Jute, Mesta. Oil seeds: Ground nut, Mustard, Sunflower, Safflower, Linseed, Sesamum and Castor; Green manure crops: Dhanicha. Non-insect pests, Rodents, Mites and Nematodes.

 

Unit III: Factors affecting losses of stored grain and role of physical, biological, mechanical and chemical factors in deterioration of grain. Insect pests, mites, rodents, birds and microorganisms associated with stored grain and their management. Storage structure and methods of grain storage and fundamental principles of grain store management.

 

Practical

  • Identification of typical infestation of various phytophagous insect-pests of field crops.
  • Identification of major insect-pests of various field crops and their infestation symptoms- Paddy, Wheat, Maize, Sorghum, Sugarcane, Tobacco, Cotton, Jute, Castor, Groundnut, Mesta, Sun hemp, Pulses and Oilseeds.
  • Identification symptoms of various mites in crops and their infestation symptoms.
  • Identification of insect-pests of stored grains with their typical infestation symptoms.
  • Estimation of losses due to infestation of various insect pests in stored grains-Weight, germination and vigour loss.
  • Studies on non-insect-pests-nematodes, rodents and mites of stored grains and crops.

Dr. Nihal R is working as an Assistant Professor, Department of Entomology, M. S. Swaminathan School of Agriculture, Centurion University of Technology and Management, Odisha. He did his under graduation from University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru. His M.Sc.(Ag) and Ph.D. in Agricultural Entomology was completed in Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, West Bengal. He has qualified ICAR-NTS and ASRB-ICAR NET. His expertise are in Toxicology, Biocontrol and Nematology.
